How Can Asbestos Affect My Health?
Our bodies are unable to process and eliminate asbestos fibers. When inhaled, asbestos fibers remain in our body and can cause cancer.
There are several types of cancer associated with asbestos inhalation. The three most common types of disease related to asbestos exposure are:
- Mesothelioma
- Lung Cancer
- Asbestosis
Mesothelioma
Roughly about 200 cases of Mesothelioma are diagnosed each year. Nearly all cases are related to individuals who were exposed to asbestos. Miners, textile workers, and manufacturing workers have been linked to many of these cases.
Lung Cancer
Lung cancer is the leading cause of death of individuals who contract it through asbestos exposure. Some symptoms include coughing, shortness of breath, chest pain, and anemia.
Asbestosis
Asbestosis is a very serious disease. Symptoms may include shortness of breath, cracking noise while breathing, and chest pain. Asbestosis is disabling, and may be fatal. Individuals involved in demolition work are at the highest risk for contracting asbestosis.
