What Is Asbestos?
Asbestos is a mineral that can be identified through a microscope. Asbestos is found in the ground and is mined all over the world. Asbestos fibers can become airborne when processed. When released in the air and inhaled, asbestos can cause significant health problems many years later.
Symptoms of asbestos exposure are not immediately recognized. It is now known that symptoms usually appear 15-40 years later. It is important to call a professional if you suspect that you are being exposed to asbestos. Individuals should not attempt to handle an asbestos problem themselves.
There are many types of asbestos. The most common are:
- Chrysotile (aka. white asbestos)
- Amosite
- Crocidolite
